Slate Digital VMS ML-2
Small Diaphragm Modeling Microphone

The ML-2 microphone is the second model in our award-winning Virtual Microphone System. This small-diaphragm microphone can recreate the tone of any instrument microphone, including dynamics like the 57 and 421, cardioid patterns of classic ribbons like the 121, other famous small-diaphragm microphones like the 451 and 222, and even larger ones. Diaphragm microphones like the famous 414 and tube 67 also deserve a place in your collection.

S-47F

This famous German FET microphone model is known for its round highs, fat mids and huge low end. It is a standard in kick drum and bass cabinets, but also sounds great on toms.

S-67

This is essentially a large diaphragm tube microphone model! It has smooth and slightly dark highs, thick mids and big low end. It's great on room mics, overheads, toms, snare, guitars, basses and everything else!

S-7

This is a dynamic microphone that has made its name as a broadcast mic, but its available mids make it ideal for all types of instruments, including kicks, toms, snare, guitars, bass, and more.

S-E20

This is a dynamic microphone model that became popular in the seventies. It has a very even frequency response while maintaining a consistent tone, so it can be useful with all sorts of different sources, from vocals and electric guitar to kick drums.

S-57 Vintage

This model is a recreation of the Dynamic 57 from the early 80s, perhaps one of the most famous dynamic microphones in audio history. It is known for its powerful midrange and smooth top end, making it the best choice for guitar and snare drum.

S-Custom Snare

This is a modified version of the S-57 and produces a perfectly polished snare drum sound with added curves from the famous EQs to enhance the sound.

S-57 Modern

An all-new dynamic 57, this mic looks very similar to the old model, but with slightly softer mids and crackler highs.

S-112

This is a model of a famous modern kick drum microphone. It has a classic "lively" midrange and a thick low end.

S-421

Another classic dynamic microphone, this model is perfect for toms, kicks, guitar cabs, bass cabs and brass. It has thick low mids and punchy lows.

S-Custom Tom

This is a modified version of the S-421 that adds more highs and lows and has less low mids, creating the ultimate tom sound for both rack and floor.

S-414 Regular

This is a model of one of the most famous FET large diaphragm microphones. It has clear, crisp mids, slightly extended highs and a very fat low end. Perfect for overheads, guitar cabinets, bass cabinets, toms and brass.

S-414 Dynamic

This modeling is the same as the S-414 Normal, only optimized for use with the ML-2 when in Dynamic mode. Use this model and the ML-2's Dynamic mode when miking very loud sources.

S-12

This is a model of an old kick drum microphone. It has a crispy top, fat low mids and warm low end.

S-Custom Kick

This is a modified version of the S-12 that adds more attack and punch with less low mids and more defined lows.

S-121 Regular

This is a cardioid pattern of the classic ribbon microphone and, like the real thing, has thick lows and slightly dark highs, making it perfect for brass, strings, room mics, guitar cabinets and overheads.

S-121 Dynamic

This modeling is the same microphone as the S-121 Normal, only optimized for use with the ML-2 when in Dynamic mode. Use this model and the ML-2's Dynamic mode when miking very loud sources.

S-222

This is a popular small diaphragm tube microphone model. It has a smooth midrange, flat low end and non-harsh highs. It is ideal for drum overheads, acoustic guitars and string instruments.

S-451

This is a model of a famous small diaphragm condenser that is smooth and clear with a nice top end. It is great on snare drums, over heads, hi hats, toms and guitar cabinets when paired with one of the dynamic models.

ML-2
Like its big brother, the ML-1, the ML-2 microphone is designed to deliver an ultra-linear response without distortion so it can serve as a blank canvas for our modeling software.

During the development of the ML-2, we tested a large number of microphones and found that even the most expensive small-diaphragm microphone designs became saturated when miking very loud and transient-rich sources, such as close-miked drums. For this reason, we added a special switch called “Dynamic” to the ML-2 that reduces the microphone output and repolarizes the capsule, allowing the ML-2 to be used in extremely high SPL situations without overloading or saturating. As a result, it can be used like a dynamic microphone on drums, guitar cabinets, and more.

To get the most out of the ML-2, you can pair it with our VRS8 interface, which includes eight VMS Ultra Linear microphone preamps. Additionally, the ML-2 is available à la carte and will work with any preamp, although we cannot guarantee that the software modeling will be accurate.

DELAY-FREE PROCESSING
The Virtual Microphone System software consists of the Classic Tubes microphone module, which contains eight classic tube microphone models. None of these processing blocks add any latency to the audio signal, so if you use a low-latency interface with VMS, you can monitor through the VMS software without any audio monitoring delay.

To achieve this, we recommend a Thunderbolt or fast USB interface that records at 96kHz with the lowest possible buffer size. The combination of a 96kHz sample rate and a low buffer size provides the lowest possible latency.

VRS EXPERIENCE
You can now experience Slate Virtual Recording Studio, which includes our VMS ML-2 instrument microphone models. Click below to go to the VRS Experience page, where you can download all of the Slate plugins, including demos of our VMS microphone plugins, and a multi-track session recorded with VMS microphones via our VRS8 interface. Once you download the plugins and session, you can load a track and try out different premium virtual microphones from the microphone cabinet. Hear the legacy FET47F, 414, ribbon 121, and more.
