Semi-modular Analog Subtractive Synthesizer with VCO, VCF, VCA/Delay, 2 x Looping Envelope Generator, Attenuverter, Oscilloscope, PWM, Clock Divider and 9 Sound Cards
Teach your students the fundamentals of synthesis with the Erica Synths Bullfrog XL, a classic subtractive synthesizer created in collaboration with Richie Hawtin. Designed to captivate and inspire both beginners and professionals, the Bullfrog XL is designed specifically for teachers to use in front of the classroom, expanding on the regular Bullfrog concept by inflating its size by a factor of 3 (literally!). With its expanded size and built-in oscilloscope, the Bullfrog XL is a great addition to not only the classroom, but any studio.
The Bullfrog XL is a classic subtractive synthesizer consisting of various modules for sound generation and sound processing. Each module requires the use of patch cables to transmit signals. There is also a Voicecard preset system that adds additional functionality while facilitating the creation of original patches for easy recall. The rear panel features main CV and Gate inputs, as well as audio and headphone outputs. The instrument can also be controlled via MIDI via the 5-pin DIN connector or the USB-C connector. The Bullfrog XL includes 12 1/4" patch cables, six pre-made sound cards, three DIY sound cards and a power supply.

Bullfrog Overview
Bullfrog Overview
• Bullfrog is a classic subtractive synthesizer - it consists of several modules for sound generation - VCO, noise generator and processing - VCF, VCA / delay, as well as modules generating control and modulation signals to control them - envelope generators and sample and hold.
• The Bullfrog will not produce any sound on its own unless you use patch cables to connect the modules together or install sound cards that create specific internal connections between the modules. This approach helps you better understand the functionality of a subtractive synthesizer and the principles of sound design with such instruments.
Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO)
The voltage controlled oscillator on the Bullfrog is a sound velocity oscillator that produces sine waves and pulse waves at frequencies covering almost the entire audible range (20 Hz to 10 kHz)
Noise Generator and Mixer

Noise Generator and Mixer
Noise Generator : Generates white noise, which is a sound that contains all sound frequencies mixed together with equal amplitudes.
Mixer: Discrete waveforms with adjustable amplitude are available, as well as a mixed signal where you can define how much of each waveform is sent to Mix Out. Add external sounds to the three inputs (In 1, In 2, In 3). Plugging a cable into the input will remove the normal connection.
Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF)
Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF)
The main purpose of the filter is to change the timbre of the sound. The Bullfrog has a classic low pass 24dB/oct resonant voltage controlled filter. The module has cutoff and resonance controls. There are two CV inputs to control the filter cutoff.
Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) + Delay
Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) + Delay
VCA: The Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) is the simplest module in the synthesizer. Its sole purpose is to vary the amplitude of the signal, resulting in changes in volume.
Delay: The delay circuit receives its signal after the VCA and includes a dry/wet switch to control how much of the delay signal is mixed with the dry signal. Delay Time controls the length of the delay (30 to 340 ms), while feedback controls the number of repeats that are distorted.
Control Voltage Sources (CV): Envelope Generators + Sample & Hold
The Bullfrog has three CV sources - two envelope generators (ENV GEN 1 and ENV GEN 2) that can also be used as low-frequency oscillators, and a sample-and-hold module that outputs pulse-wave low-frequency oscillations as well as random voltages. All three circuits can be controlled with the manual Gate switch.
Divisive
• The divider is an auxiliary module that divides the frequency of the incoming signal into 2, 4, 8 and 16. Normally, such dividers work with pulse wave signals and have various applications including computers. But in Bullfrog, the incoming signal can be any signal and the divider will move to the next step as soon as the incoming signal is higher than +3V.
• In music technology, dividers can be used as frequency dividers (remember, a frequency divided by 2 gives you a pitch exactly one octave below), to control sequencers, to create drum patterns, and for many other applications.
Sound Cards
Sound cards extend the functionality of the Bullfrog and make it even more versatile. Essentially, sound cards replace patch cables - they connect the Bullfrog's modules internally. But that's not all - some sound cards have built-in mixers, signal generators and advanced electrical circuitry to control the synthesizer (for example, a sequencer that sends CVs to control pitch and gate to trigger events in the synthesizer).

The Bullfrog XL comes with 6 sound cards:
• ACID BASSLINE: Instantly provides all the connections needed to produce a powerful bassline.
• SAMPLER-LOOPER: Emulates the functionality of a tape recorder by recording audio up to 10 inches from the internal microphone or the Bullfrog itself and then feeds it back into the Bullfrog's audio path for processing via VCF, VCA and Delay.
• HIGHPASS VCF: Expands Bullfrog's audio processing capabilities by exploring high-pass and band-pass filtering.
• ELECTRIC ORGAN: Simulates a pipe organ when several notes are played together. It also demonstrates the principles of additive synthesis, where several simple waveforms are combined to produce more complex sounds.
• ANALOG SEQUENCER: Compact CV/GATE five-step sequencer that generates up to five steps of discrete control voltages that control gates that trigger one pitch of the VCO and the envelope generators. Audio and CV connections are the same as for the Acid Bassline voicecard.
• LFO SOUND CARD
• LFO SOUND CARD
• EMPTY DIY VOICECARDS (x3): Allows you to create custom connections for Bullfrog modules. The sound card mimics the Bullfrog's connection points. You need a wire and a soldering iron (and some soldering skills) to make the connections. Use a piece of wire to connect the points on the sound card and solder the wire. We recommend connecting directly on the Bullfrog with patch cables first, and if you like a certain patch, you can make a DIY sound card out of it.
Additional sound cards can be purchased separately:
• GROOVEBOX: Adds electronic drum sounds to a main synth sound and includes two semi-random pattern sequencers - a trigger sequencer for drum sounds and a CV/gate sequencer for a bassline. Essentially, it turns Bullfrog into a fully functional groovebox.
• WIND & STARS: Automatically simulates random wind sounds and blinking stars are controlled by the divider. (Toddlers fall asleep better when they hear such sounds).
